Prime Minister, EU R Letting Gen Z Down
Prime Minister, EU R Letting Gen Z Down
At this week’s Prime Minister’s Questions, party leader Sir Ed Davey asked Keir Starmer whether he would be open to revisiting the UK’s participation in a UK-EU Youth Mobility Scheme.
During the General Election campaign, I stood on a platform to fix our Broken Relationship with Europe, with the long term goal of rejoining the Single Market.
As Liberal Democrats, we recognise that to achieve this goal, we must rebuild trust through reciprocal arrangements, such as accepting the EU’s offer of joining a Youth Mobility Scheme.
This proposal would allow 18-30 year olds from the UK to live, work and study in the EU for up to four years, and vice versa for EU citizens.
Labour rejected this proposal within hours of it being announced back in April, as it would cross a “red line” regarding freedom of movement.
At Prime Minister’s Questions, our party leader Ed Davey asked Keir Starmer if he would reconsider his position, now that he has engaged in talks with the EU about resetting the relationship. Yet again, the Prime Minister reiterated that he would not compromise on his red lines. No return to the single market, customs union or Freedom of Movement.
Why should the Prime Minister deny young people of this country the same rights and opportunities that us millennials once had? By kowtowing to the right wing media and former Conservative voters, he is denying our younger voters the right of opportunity. We have reciprocal arrangements with countries like South Korea and Australia, so why can’t we have them closer to home?
If you want this Labour Government to change course, please sign my petition and I will forward this to our local Labour MP, Andrew Cooper, to ensure that our young people will not be ignored.
