Statement: Cllr Mandy Clare

As a Liberal Democrat spokesperson and a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community, I want to express my disappointment with the views shared by Councillor Mandy Clare. While it’s important to have open conversations and disagreements in politics, I believe those discussions should be based on facts and approached with kindness and respect.
Generally, the first rule in politics is not to amplify the voices of those you disagree with. But I also believe in standing up for what’s right. I can’t celebrate the wonderful diversity of our area at Pride each year and stay silent when I see hyperbolic language and divisive rhetoric being used.
Chester Pride is an event I wholeheartedly support and have attended many times, celebrating with friends and fellow members of the LGBTQ+ community. It’s upsetting to see images from Pride, including pictures of people I know and care about, used in a way that distorts its meaning. Pride is about love, acceptance, and standing together — those values should never be misrepresented.

Councillor Clare’s choice of words and reliance on opinions rather than facts hinder the respectful dialogue we need. Public figures have a responsibility to lead conversations that bring people together, not drive them apart.
My commitment to promoting inclusivity and equality remains strong. The Liberal Democrats will always stand up for LGBTQ+ rights, fight against discrimination, and support policies that build a fairer and more compassionate society.
While I fully respect Councillor Clare’s right to express her views, I firmly reject narratives that misrepresent facts or foster division. We all have a role to play in creating communities where everyone feels safe, valued, and respected.
Let’s continue these conversations with empathy and understanding, working together to build a kinder and more inclusive society.
